Now for a different type of activity. Everyone knows (or
everyone should know by now) that games are a good way to review or to learn
something. On the internet is a collection of games math teachers use to have
students practice skills (like adding/subtracting, multiplying and stuff like
that.) Your assignment is to read about one of the games and play it, either in
class, at lunch or at home. Then invent your own review game. Your game should
review some basic skill: adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
After we play the game in class, we will discuss it and then…..teach
it to another class, either older kids or younger kids. You can decide, I'll do the asking of another teacher.
You must use a deck of cards (uno, regular cards, phase 10,
skippo, etc). Anything else you want to add must be approved by your teacher.
Remember, your game must review a basic skill and be easy
enough to be taught quickly.
You can find the games here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnpqaAgek0pYdFdSbkRWNXZwUjYtU1gtd29tam05UWc#gid=0
but that’s way too long to type so go to
carreramath.blogspot.com and click on the link on the side that says “math
games for classrooms.”
TO TURN IN (compete sentences with grammar) TO ME:

(1) What game did you play?
(2) What did you think about the game? Easy/hard? Fun/boring? What else?
your game
(3) Name of your game

This is a great idea! I can't wait to see what they come up with! I bought some really cool dice at NCCTM last week and spend math club time having kids try to come up with games. A couple of kids came up with some really good ones.
ReplyDeleteThis is a such great idea. I may have my students pick a game from the list to learn, and then teach it to the rest of the class (and me) if they like it. That would be a terrific time saver for me and fun for them.
